At Eaglecrest Ski Area, Juneau’s beloved community-owned mountain playground, there’s a winter tradition that pairs speed, skill, and smiles in a way few other programs do: the Juneau 4-H Luge Club. This spirited program has grown into a highlight of Eaglecrest’s winter offerings, giving both youth and adults the chance to experience the joy of sliding down snow-packed luge runs.
Program Roots and Growth
The Juneau 4-H Luge Club is deeply rooted in community effort. For nearly a decade, leader Doug Sanvik and his wife Martina have been central to the program’s growth, championing it through volunteer leadership, fundraising, and building the infrastructure that makes the luge experience possible. Their dedication helped the club secure donations, grants, specialized sleds, helmets and even a custom storage shed right at Eaglecrest to house equipment for the season.
Eaglecrest has welcomed the club with open arms. The ski area provides space for two luge trails within its boundaries and supports the club by grooming these runs on Saturday mornings, ensuring safe and fun conditions for participants.
Community and Participation
One of the most inspiring parts of the program is how it brings people of all ages together to enjoy a winter sport that’s accessible and exciting. Last season alone, 115 children and adults who had never tried luge before joined in hours of sliding fun, guided by club leadership.
Whether folks are racing friends, honing sliding skills, or simply savoring the thrill of descending the snow-covered hill, the luge club fosters a sense of community and shared winter adventure. The program’s success is bolstered by generous community support, including a significant grant from the Juneau Community Foundation that made recent improvements possible.
What Makes It Special
Unlike more formal competitive luge tracks seen in Olympic venues, the Juneau 4-H program celebrates fun, learning, and community participation. It’s an opportunity to try luge in a welcoming setting supported by volunteers, partners, and a ski area that values outdoor recreation for locals and visitors alike.
As Eaglecrest’s community continues to grow, the 4-H Luge Club remains a vibrant, community-focused tradition that brings the thrill of sliding to everyone eager to give it a try. If you’re looking to add a bit of speed and laughter to your winter season, the Juneau 4-H Luge Program is an unforgettable way to experience Eaglecrest and build community.
