As the snow begins to fall here in Juneau, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on an incredible local resource: the ORCA Adaptive Ski & Snowboard Program offered in partnership with Eaglecrest Ski Area.
What ORCA + Eaglecrest Offers
-
Beginning each January and continuing through spring, ORCA teams up with Eaglecrest’s Snowsports School to provide adaptive skiing and snowboarding lessons every weekend, until the snow melts.
-
The program includes a wide array of adaptive gear from bi-skis and mono-skis to Nordic sit-skis, outriggers, “sliders,” and other assistive technologies, making winter sports accessible to people of all ages, abilities, and experience levels.
-
Instruction is led by certified and experienced instructors: many are PSIA-certified, with specialties including adaptive, alpine, and senior skiing.
-
There are two session types: More Information
-
Lessons — for beginners or people with learning goals, taught by certified instructors.
-
Guided sessions — for those who already have skiing experience but might want a buddy or some support on the mountain.
-
-
The base of operations is at the Porcupine Lodge at Eaglecrest, just about 15 minutes from downtown Juneau on North Douglas.
Why the Partnership Matters
The collaboration between ORCA and Eaglecrest is more than just convenience, it’s about inclusion, accessibility, and community connection.
-
Eaglecrest is Juneau’s public ski area, with 640 acres, 36 runs, Nordic trails, and has three chairlifts that supports a full alpine experience.
-
By integrating adaptive gear, certified adaptive instructors, and support services (like reduced-price lessons, equipment rental, and accessible transport), the program lowers common barriers to winter sports for individuals with disabilities or limited mobility.
-
It reflects a broader philosophy: recreation isn’t just leisure, it’s a pathway to increased independence, inclusion, confidence, social connection, and well-being.
