Are you a purveyor of fresh powder? Join the Community Snow Observation Network, a citizen science campaign that engages backcountry recreationists in collecting snow measurements around the world.

Measuring snow depth takes only a few minutes out of your adventure. The power of community science is that all of us together can make many more measurements than any one person or scientific team. With the Mountain Hub app, you can make snow-depth measurements as you travel. You’ll become part of a growing community of observers, and get the chance to understand more about the snowpack and its variability in the areas that you frequent.

CSO integrates the snow-depth data into snow models and remote sensing imagery, then shares the results back to the community. Your measurements help scientists improve the accuracy of snow and water models, predict snow conditions and freshwater reservoirs, and mitigate avalanche danger.
